Why I use Twitter more than Google+
Sunday 31 July 2011 at 12:50 I've not really switched to Google+ despite it having some great features and a lot of promise as a great way of communicating with people. The problem I have is that it has a few large gaps between the way I use Twitter and the way I want to use Google+.
Firstly, I want one-button public sharing. Example: the retweet button. I don't want to have to pick circles. If it's shared publically, I want to reshare it publically. After all, why would I narrow the visibility of an article?
Secondly, I want to share things with people who haven't already seen it. Example: I share something which is then reshared. It appears twice in my stream.
Thirdly, I want to have people in circles but not in my default stream. Example: extremely chatty folk who drown out the people who write only occasionally.
For me I just haven't invested much time in Google+, so it will take a while to find interesting people. With Twitter my follow list has grown quite organically and so the same will have to happen with Google+. It's not something I'm going to switch to overnight, I'll linger in the background until I find that I'm using it more than Twitter. I think that this is quite different to the concept of switching from Facebook as I don't use it.
Finally, Twitter has a rich ecosystem of alternative clients many of which are technically good but not quite right for me. I finally found one I really like, and I'm waiting for something similar to happen with G+; I'm sure it will eventually once they create an application development API for coders to use to create cool things.
